Continuing Education Requirements for Michigan Chiropractors
The Michigan Public Health Code and Board administrative rules requires
every chiropractor to complete, during the 2-year period prior to the
expiration date of the license, not less than 30 hours of continuing
education in courses or programs approved by the Board.
REQUIREMENTS FOR LICENSE RENEWAL
The continuing education requirements apply to every chiropractor
renewing a Michigan license that held the license for the 2-year period
immediately preceding the date of the license renewal. The requirements
apply whether or not the chiropractor is actively engaged in the practice
of chiropractic. No one is exempt from this requirement.
Each chiropractor is required to complete 30 hours of continuing education
in courses or programs approved by the Board. Each chiropractor is
required to complete:
- One (1) continuing education hour in sexual boundaries
- One (1) continuing education hour in ethics
- One (1) continuing education hours in pain and symptom management.
Not more than six of the required 30 hours may be in board-approved
online computer programs.
Every chiropractor that is renewing his/her license should retain
records documenting the completion of continuing education. Those
documents should be retained for a period of four (4) years after the
application for renewal. Doctors do not have to provide proof of required
CEs unless requested by the state.
DCs who do not have the required 30 hours of CE should not renew their
license. These DCs must then go through the relicensure process. A
chiropractor who is unable to provide evidence of completion of the
continuing education requirements, when requested, is in violation of the
Michigan Public Health Code and subject to one or more of the following
possible license sanctions: reprimand, probation, denial, suspension,
revocation, limitation, restitution, and fine.
Requirement for Relicensure
“Relicensure” means the granting of a license to a person whose license
has lapsed for failure to renew the license within 60 days after the
expiration date. Important Note: Although a 60-day late renewal period is
allowed, the 30-hour continuing education requirement must be completed by
November 30.
All relicensure applicants must have completed, in the 3-year period
immediately preceding the application for relicensure, 42 hours of
continuing education in programs approved by the board, with not less than
24 hours in courses on chiropractic adjusting techniques, and
- One (1) continuing education hour in “sexual boundaries
- One (1) continuing education hour in ethics
- One (1) continuing education hours in pain and symptom management.
Not more than six of the required hours may be in board-approved online
computer programs.
If a chiropractor has been continuously licensed and engaged in the
practice of chiropractic in another state during the 3-year period
immediately preceding the application for relicensure, the chiropractor
does not have to complete the continuing education requirements.
Verification of licensure must be sent directly to the Michigan Board of
Chiropractic by the licensing agency in the state in which the
chiropractor is licensed.
