2017 UP Con McLean Speaker PICThis seminar is designed to give the chiropractor a review of the most appropriate diagnostic imaging studies for common conditions seen in chiropractic practice. While specialized imaging has made spectacular advances during the last decade, the conventional plain film radiograph remains an important imaging procedure for the chiropractor. This presentation is designed to review critical concepts in conventional radiography, including image interpretation and pertinent radiographic physics and technological parameters. Topics include the basics of image interpretation, producing quality images, digital radiology, selecting patients for imaging examinations, and case studies of musculoskeletal and soft tissue pathologies.

Ian McLean, DC, DACBR, is director of clinical radiology and the Radiology Residency Program at Palmer’s main campus. He is also a radiologist for Palmer Imaging Consultation Services. Dr. McLean earned a Diplomate from the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology and has undergone extensive MRI training. He presents seminars worldwide and is a member of the American Chiropractic Association and the Iowa Chiropractic Society. He’s the author of numerous publications, including serving as a contributing author to Dr. Dennis Marchiori’s “Clinical Imaging with Skeletal, Chest and Abdomen Differentials,” used in the curriculums of most chiropractic colleges. He was named a Fellow in the Palmer Academy of Chiropractic in 2010. 

Manuel Anthony Duarte, DC – Sport Injury Management of the Foot and Ankle

Sunday, August 20: 8a-12p 

2017 UP Con Duarte Speaker PICThe speaker for this course will discuss management of sports injuries of the foot and ankle, with an emphasis on examination procedures, phases and chronology of wound healing, inflammation, using heat and cold to treat sports injuries, interferential therapy, rehabilitation protocols, therapeutic exercises, proprioception, complementary chiropractic manipulative techniques, and protocols for lateral ankle sprain, chronic instability, and syndesmotic ankle sprain. Don’t miss this dynamic presentation!

Dr. Manuel Anthony Duarte has been a full-time faculty member at National for 19 years, serving on the chiropractic practice faculty as a clinician at National's Whole Health Center - Lombard and teaching in the postgraduate education program. He is now chair of clinical practice and chief clinician for the DC program. special interest is sports injuries, and he maintains a private practice in which he specializes in training both amateur and professional athletes. In addition to certifications as a chiropractic sports physician and strength training specialist, Dr. Duarte has also earned diplomates from the American Board of Chiropractic Orthopedics and the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. 

Mr. Carl Alden – Ethics and Sexual Boundaries/Insurance Update

Sunday, August 20: 12-3p 

Carl AldenJoin the MAC’s Carl Alden for this in-depth look at ethics and boundaries issues potentially encountered in chiropractic practice. Carl will define ethics and good moral character and discuss unethical behavior under the Michigan Public Health Code (violation of general duty, personal disqualifications, prohibited acts, and unethical business practices), the Chiropractic Administrative Rules, Michigan’s Child Protection Law, and the Health Care False Claims Act. 2 CEs possible. Ethics and Sexual Boundaries. 

Then, Carl will discuss the latest billing issues and concerns in Michigan’s Workers Compensation System, ERISA plans, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Medicare, and more. He will also provide an in-depth discussion on proper coding under Michigan’s chiropractic scope. Topics include office visits for new and established patients, CMT codes, radiological and other imaging codes, and physical medicine procedure codes. 1 CE possible. 

Mr. Carl Alden is the Michigan Association of Chiropractors’ resident specialist on insurance. Most of his days are spent on the phone assisting MAC members with a variety of insurance issues. Along with these duties, Carl is also the MAC Governmental Relations Director. He is a graduate of Michigan State University.
